    Experimental Study of the Structural Behaviour of Fibre Reinforced Concrete Using Cassava Strand (Central Vascular Fibre CVF) Waste

    The purpose of this experimental research is to know the structural behaviour of fibre reinforced concrete using cassava strand (Central Vascular Fibre CVF) waste. This project is been done by adding cassava strand (CVF) waste as fibre to concrete and this is to increase the toughness and tensile strength and improve the cracking deformation characteristics of the resultant composite material. The cassava strand (CVF) waste constitute a bye product of a predominantly tuber crop in Nigeria. These strand (CVF) wastes were air dried to remove or reduce the moisture content. Their aspect ratio were then calculated and they were mixed by volume proportion of 0% to 3.0% in concrete matrix (1:2:4) with varying water/cement ratio in order to have an acceptable workability. Slump and compacting factor tests were carried out on the wet concrete and compressive strength test on the hardened concrete after curing. Results showed that a wide range of high strength were achieved with compressive strength of 25.42N/mm2 and 19.42N/mm2 for 0.5% and 1.0% CVF addition respectively while the control is 21.75N/mm2 at 28day test. It is recommended that up to 1.0% CVF can be used for structural works while 1.5% and 2.0% be used for non-structural works like solid ground floors and light weight concrete.

    Flexural Properties of Concrete Beam using Rice Husk Ash (RHA) a Partial Replacement of Cement

    The research work examines the structural properties of concrete beam (flexural strength and deflection)under loading with partial replacement of cement with Rice Husk Ash (RHA).The Pozzolanic potential of RHA came to bear. Samples were made for various percentage of replacement (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) with0% replacements for the control and tested at 7, 14 and 28 days. The results showed that there was an increase in flexural strength from 7 to 28 days with 6.0, 6.0, 3.6, 5.2 and 4.6 N/mm2 for the 28days test and 30% replacement, maintaining the same flexural strength for the entire test. It was also observed that there was a decrease in deflection value at rupture with progression in age with increase RHA content showing lesser capacity to carry imposed load. However, the water/cement ratio for the 30% AND 40% RHA/cement samples were increased to ensure a workable mix. These improved the result obtained when compared with the 20% RAH/cement having similar w/c the control and 10% RHA cement Samples. Setting time and slump test were also carried out and the results shows that with increase in RHA content in cement, lower values were obtained for the initial and setting time and for the slump test.     Flexural Properties of Finely Granulated Plastic Waste as a Partial Replacement of Fine Aggregate in Concrete

    The research work evaluates the structural properties of concrete with fine aggregates being substituted with granulated plastic waste [GPW] using high density polyethylene (HDPE). The plastic wastes were shredded and grounded into fine material passing through 0.5mm sieve. The fine aggregate was substituted from 0% to 50% (with 0% serving as the control) and water-cement ratio ranges from 0.6 for 0%-30% substitution and 0.7 for 40% and 50% using a concrete matrix 1:2:4. Various tests were carried out, workability, compacting factor and V.B consistometer on the wet concrete and compressive strength test on the hardened concrete after curing. Results showed that a wide range of high early strength was achieved with compressive strength of 21.42N/mm2, 17N/mm2 and 9.67N/mm2 for 10%, 20% and 30% fine aggregate replacement respectively while the control is 21.75N/mm2 at 28days test. It is recommended that a 10% replacement be used for structural works while 20% and 30% be used for non-structural works like solid ground floors and light weight concrete.

    Promoting Skill Acquisition Among Over Certificated, Unemployed, Underemployed and Uneducated Nigerian Young People

    The issue of over-certification, unemployment, underemployment, and a lack of formal education among Nigerian youth, who account for more than 70% of the population, presents a serious barrier to the country's socioeconomic growth. This paper investigates the significance of promoting skill acquisition and apprenticeship as effective strategies for addressing these interconnected challenges, providing a path for young Nigerians to gain relevant competencies, work experience, and self-reliance in the face of limited employment and educational opportunities. 556 young individuals were questioned using a questionnaire. 83.6% of respondents have several academic credentials but lack the practical skills and abilities required in the work market. Similarly, ignorant and undereducated youngsters aspired to receive formal education, yet the majority of them are skilled and gainfully employed. In light of this, the study highlights the value of skill development and apprenticeship programmes in offering overqualified, jobless, underemployed, and illiterate Nigerian youth other routes to work and economic emancipation. Through these programmes, young people may enhance their employment chances and build marketable skills and job experience. They also provide mentorship and work-based learning opportunities.

    Multi-Dimensional National Policies' Effects on the Nigeria Polytechnic System

    The polytechnics were established to produce a high-level technical skilled workforce for the nation’s industrial development. But over the years, the polytechnic system in Nigeria has suffered neglect from funding to different forms of institutional assault because of national policies from various agencies of the Government. This research work considered some of these policies and their effects on the Polytechnic system in Nigeria, particularly on the students and general enrolment. Data was gotten from regulatory agencies and questionnaires were administered randomly to past and present students of the polytechnics. Statistical analysis was also employed to check the trend, and it was found that the damaging effect of these policies on the polytechnic system has led to a reduction in enrolment, discrimination against the system and her products and a large significant drop in high-level technical skill manpower for the nation. A model is also proposed to create a seamless transition in learning that makes progression meaningful and stops the trend and promotes competition among our scholars
