Abstract
This study examined the influence of work environment factors on employee performance among office secretaries in Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study investigated the effect of supervisor support, co-worker relationships, and training and development on employee performance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and the study utilized a census approach covering the entire population of 200 office secretaries. Data were collected from 170 respondents using a structured questionnaire based on a four-point Likert scale. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that supervisor support, co-worker relationships, and training and development have significant positive relationships with employee performance. The regression results indicated that the independent variables jointly explained a substantial proportion of the variation in employee performance (R² = 0.71, p < 0.05). Individually, supervisor support (β = 0.28, p < 0.05), co-worker relationships (β = 0.31, p < 0.05), and training and development (β = 0.36, p < 0.05) were found to significantly influence employee performance, with training and development emerging as the strongest predictor. The study concluded that a supportive work environment enhances employee productivity, efficiency, and overall organizational effectiveness. It was recommended that the management of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro should implement policies that promote continuous staff development, encourage teamwork, and foster supportive leadership practices.
