Abstract
In contemporary education, bilingualism has emerged as a crucial element, particularly in foreign language instruction. This study explores the cognitive, linguistic, and pedagogical benefits of bilingualism in enhancing foreign language acquisition. Our research critically analyzes bilingual teaching methodologies and their effectiveness in fostering linguistic proficiency and cultural competence among language learners. Using a qualitative approach, we reviewed existing literature, conducted case studies in four schools (Abeokuta Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Ikenne High School, and Odogbolu Secondary School, and Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro) in rural and urban areas of Ogun State, and observed classroom practices to assess how bilingual instructional methods improve language retention, problem-solving skills, and intercultural communication. Our findings indicate that bilingual education significantly enhances cognitive flexibility, metalinguistic awareness, and overall language proficiency, with improvements of 25%, 30%, and 40%, respectively. This research addresses gaps in older literature, including outdated pedagogical models and limited integration of digital learning tools, by incorporating contemporary linguistic theories and technological advancements. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform language education policy and practice, promoting more effective and inclusive language learning experiences. Our study provides valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers seeking to improve foreign language instruction and highlights the importance of bilingualism in today's globalized world.
