Abstract

Purpose: This study examined the interconnections between cost-reduction techniques and the challenges affecting their implementation in public tertiary institution building projects in Nigeria. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study employed a quantitative research approach using a structured questionnaire. Quota purposive sampling was used to select 138 construction professionals who have worked on construction projects completed between 2012 and 2022 in public tertiary institutions in Ogun, Lagos, Osun, and Oyo states. SPSS 23 was used to analyse the demographic data, while SmartPLS v4.0.9.8 software was used to model the relationship. Findings: The study indicated that the challenges hindering the implementation of cost-reduction techniques are intertwined. Research Limitation: The study is limited to public tertiary institution building projects; care should be taken in generalising to other project types. Practical Implication: The model developed by the study will serve as a helpful guide for implementing preventive measures and addressing the challenges that hinder the implementation of cost-reduction techniques. Social Implication: The model will be useful to public institution managers and construction experts in achieving cost savings and environmental sustainability in public tertiary education building projects. Originality / Value: This study bridges the knowledge gap by modelling the relationship between cost-reduction techniques and the challenges hindering their implementation in public tertiary-institution projects.
