Baseline survey and design of the traditional core area of Ilaro, Nigeria

Abstract

Ilaro is a typical Nigerian traditional settlement that is becoming urbanized through major institutional andindustrial establishments within and around. It and has started manifesting signs of internal decay and aclose mix of tradition and civilization. This study focuses a core part of the township directly abutting itscommercial and administrative precincts. It reveals a myriad of substandard housing and environmentalconditions which were linked substantially, to the difficult terrains of the location and prevalence of povertyamong the residents. Of the development yearnings in the study area, provision of potable water, goodaccessibility and control of erosion became topical. The study identified plausible sites for these andassociated infrastructural upgrade and presented a blueprint design towards ameliorating the environmentalqualities of the study area, devoid of any dislocation or dispossession of original re
