Abstract

This study investigates the critical role of language and communication in disseminating agricultural knowledge among farmers in Ogun State, Nigeria. The effective dissemination of agricultural knowledge is crucial for improving farming practices, enhancing productivity, and ensuring food security. However, language barriers and ineffective communication strategies often hinder knowledge transfer, limiting the impact of agricultural development programs. Using qualitative methods (in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis) with 80 farmers and 40 agricultural extension agents, we explored the role of language and communication in agricultural knowledge dissemination. The findings highlight the importance of local languages, such as Yoruba, in agricultural training programs, improving knowledge retention and application. The study reveals that farmers who received training in Yoruba demonstrated better comprehension and retention of agricultural practices compared to those trained in English. A multilingual approach, incorporating Yoruba, Pidgin English, and English, is recommended to enhance communication effectiveness. This study suggests that language-sensitive strategies are crucial for effective agricultural knowledge dissemination. By prioritizing local languages and effective communication, agricultural extension services can increase engagement, improve knowledge dissemination, and contribute to increased agricultural productivity and food security in Nigeria. The findings have significant implications for agricultural development programs, emphasizing the need for language-sensitive strategies to promote sustainable agricultural practices and food security.
