Abstract
Secondary school education normally precedes tertiary education. The student’s choice of career in later life often depends on his performance at the secondary school level. This may be the reason why secondary school curricula, are designed to include general and pre-vocational subjects. Pre-vocational subjects include science and commercial subjects. The subjects aim at training students for future office work and also to prepare them for higher education. The purpose of this investigation is to find out the attitude of secretarial students in polytechnics to secondary commercial education as a foundation for secretarial training. The study was carried out in Polytechnics in Lagos and Ogun States, based on the following working hypotheses; that secretarial students in polytechnics consider secondary commercial education a necessary foundation for secretarial training, that secretarial students in polytechnics think that prior experience in secretarial practice improves student performance in the polytechnic and that secretarial students feel that the training received at the tertiary level is a continuation of the one received at commercial schools.
