Abstract

The translational challenges presented by the globalization of African indigenous knowledge systems, particularly Ifá discourse, threaten the preservation of their philosophical, spiritual, and cultural core. A few chapters from Èjì Ogbe, which is a part of Ologundudu's (2008) comprehensive Ifá divination textbook, are examined in this study. This foundational work of literature is renowned for its spiritual lessons, cosmological references, and metaphors. The study employs a discourse-analytical approach with the following goals in mind: (1) analyze the translational problems that affect the Ifá discourse's semantic, cultural, and functional integrity; (2) look into how the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory of equivalence can help with these problems; and (3) make recommendations for how to preserve the textual, interpersonal, and experiential meanings of Ifá texts. The findings demonstrate how translation processes frequently result in pragmatic changes, contextual displacement, and the loss of metaphorical depth, undermining the discourse's authenticity. Religious metaphors, for instance, can occasionally be simplified or misunderstood, losing their cosmic and spiritual significance. Ceremonial instructions and Ajogún are two examples. This study emphasizes how crucial it is to maintain interpersonal interactions, textual coherence, and cultural metaphors in order to maintain functional equivalency by proposing strategies like transliteration, cultural annotation, and the preservation of repeated structures. These observations support the preservation of Ifá discourse as a vital source of indigenous African knowledge in light of the growing global interconnectedness of the world.
